It lingered anyway, like a line of code that never executes but still shapes the program.

Some of those questions stuck with me. Not because they were clever, but because they were honest. They were the kind of questions that don’t just look for answers—they expose how you think about what happened after enough time has passed to see it clearly.

This series of posts is built from those questions.

The first one sounds simple enough: “How did you get into business, and what were the results?” But like most worthwhile questions, the real answer doesn’t begin where the question does.

Before Business, There Was Curiosity

I didn’t set out to get into business. I went to MIT to study Electrical Engineering because I liked building things. That was the starting point. No grand strategy. No carefully polished five-year plan. Just curiosity, hardware, and the satisfaction of making something work that did not exist before. My early fascination was fed by Heathkit kits and by the kind of tinkering that makes a person ignore the label that says there are no user-serviceable parts inside.

When the acceptance letter from MIT arrived, my reaction was basically: okay, I guess that’s the place to go. Back in the 80s, that was how decisions like this often worked. There were no websites to comb through, no online videos, no social platforms pretending to be guidance counselors. You had books, letters, maybe a campus visit, and your own instincts. So I dove in.

I still remember 8.012, the freshman physics class for people who “liked math.” On the first day—yes, the first day—there was a test just to see where everyone stood. It felt less like a warm welcome and more like being dropped into the trenches with your classmates and told to survive together. By the time the final exam arrived, the difficulty had gone from intimidating to nearly theatrical. A lot of us wrote F = MA in hopes of getting at least one point for identifying one of the equations we might need to solve a problem that felt nearly unsolvable. Thank God for pass/fail in freshman year.

As brutal as that sounds, I loved MIT. More so when it was over than while I was in the middle of it, which may be the most honest MIT sentence possible. The education was extraordinary. On most, if not all, exams, you could bring your books, calculators, and notes. The point was not memorization. The point was application. The point was solving problems you had never seen before. I hope it still works that way. Whether or not that directly answers Joe’s question, it absolutely shaped who I became. You cannot separate that training from the person I later turned into.

The First Business I Didn’t Realize Was a Business

If you really want to trace the business thread, it probably starts with the fact that I taught myself C while I was at MIT. At the time, Megamax C had been released for the Macintosh. It was one of the earliest C development systems for that machine, and it came bundled with the source code to Megaroids, written by Mike Bunnell, as an example of what the system could do. That mattered. Inspiration often arrives wearing the costume of an example file.

That was what pushed me to write a casual graphical game for the original Macintosh called The Dungeon of Doom. It was inspired by Rogue on Unix, but I wanted to take that idea out of its existing environment and turn it into something ordinary people could simply enjoy. Not admire. Not academically respect. Enjoy.

It became a surprisingly large success in the Shareware world at the time. It appeared in magazines. I received notes from all over the world in the mail, which in the pre-internet era felt almost magical. Imagine that now: a thing you built on your machine somehow finding its way into homes and hands you would never see, then a letter arriving to prove it. It generated money too. Not enough to live on, but certainly not enough to sneeze at either.

So yes, I suppose I was in business. I just never really thought about making a company out of it. That distinction matters. Sometimes you are doing the thing long before you have the language to describe what you are doing.

After MIT, I took two years to decompress and to see whether writing code was something I wanted to explore further. I wrote a few things outside the gaming world, but nothing reached the same level of visibility or success. There was a company interested in hiring me for my programming skills, but for reasons I could not fully explain at the time, something deep inside me was not terribly excited by that path. It was not logic. It was not analysis. It was just one of those early inner signals that says, not this.

A quick aside: Forty years ago, on the original 128K Macintosh with its single 400-kilobyte floppy disk, the first version of The Dungeon of Doom was written and run using Megamax C. That entire world—operating system, compiler, the game, and all save files—had to fit on one small floppy that held less data than a single modern smartphone photo does today. The Mac had only 128 kilobytes of memory; today’s phones have around 8 to 16 gigabytes, roughly 65,000 times more. Its processor ran at about 0.7 million instructions per second, while a current phone’s chip is tens of thousands of times faster. In fact, the computational work required to take and process one everyday phone photo—using advanced AI and multiple image layers—often exceeds the total computing power the Macintosh used to run the entire game from start to finish. What once filled an entire digital universe now fits in the space and effort of a casual snapshot.

The Business I Never Expected

In the background of all of that was the family plastic packaging business. On the surface, it had almost nothing to do with electrical engineering. But despite all my shortcomings at the time, I seemed to have at least enough self-awareness to know that what burned inside me was not tied to a specific industry. It was tied to the desire to make things better than they were.

To some degree, that is what I had done with The Dungeon of Doom. I took an idea I admired and made it more accessible, more usable, more enjoyable. The family business was different. It was not a piece of software or a side project. It was a beast, and I had no practical understanding of how to tame it.

What made all the difference, looking back, was not that my father mentored me directly. He didn’t, at least not in the usual sense. What he did do was have me spend time in different parts of the business. Yes, I was in the Information Technology department, or whatever it was called back then, but I also spent time in sales, on the factory floor, working on machines, getting my hands dirty. Without realizing it, I was being taught to see the whole organism instead of just my corner of it.

And I started to see it. The good and the bad. The success and the frustration. The visible machinery and the invisible drag. I began to understand that this was something that needed to be made better.

I don’t think I fully understood the word needed until I spent time in the Finance Department. That was where I saw that finding enough cash to get through to tomorrow seemed to be the ongoing focus. It changes your view of a business when you realize that survival is sitting quietly underneath the official story.

At the same time, I heard people talk about the company’s history, especially the history of its success. Those stories were real. They mattered. But nobody was speaking with the same brutal honesty about how we had arrived at the problems we now had. They were not ignoring the problems entirely. That would be too easy an accusation. It was more subtle than that. They had the blinders of success on and could not see beyond them.

That is one of the more dangerous side effects of having once done well. Past success can become a form of camouflage.

When the Learning Really Began

Then my father passed away, and I became responsible for the end result. In that moment, the only thing I knew for sure was that we had to do something different. Not eventually. Not theoretically. But now.

That was when the real learning began.

As aware as I was that I wanted to make things better, I also knew something else just as important: I was not an operator. I was not the person who should be running every function of the business day to day. I wanted to work with the people who could make that happen. I just needed to find them.

That may sound obvious now, but self-awareness is often expensive. Plenty of people spend decades and a great deal of collateral damage trying to become the wrong version of themselves.

Through grace and faith, I found the people I needed to find, and the rest is history. That phrase can sound a little too neat for a life that never actually feels neat while you are living it, but it is still true. What came after shaped everything. It made me who I am today.

Still learning every day. Still solving problems. Still wanting to make things better.

🌱 Seed Thought: Maybe that is the real answer to Joe’s question. I did not get into business because I dreamed of being “in business.” I got into it because I kept following the friction. I kept noticing what was broken, what could be improved, what wanted to be made better. MIT sharpened the way I thought. The family business forced me to confront reality, responsibility, and the difference between wanting improvement and being capable of leading it into existence.

Business, in the end, was never the headline. It was the arena where all of those parts of me met.

By the time this question came around on that flight, a pattern was forming. Joe wasn’t asking about outcomes. He was asking about mechanics. Not what worked—but how it worked.

“What rituals, methods, or strategies do you use to stay focused and effective?”

He gave his own example—how he could get more done in an hour at a library than a full day in his office. That idea stuck. Not the library. The intent behind it.

Focus is not found. It’s constructed.

At the time, my answer revolved around NET time—No Extra Time. The concept still holds. But it needs a correction.

Time Is Not Multitasking

This is the part I didn’t make clear enough back then. NET time is not about doing more things at once. Most “multitasking” is just rapid context switching—and it usually leads to less getting done, not more. Fragmented attention produces fragmented results.

What NET time is actually about is more subtle: maintaining focus while something else is happening. Not splitting attention—stacking environments. You’re not doing two things poorly. You’re doing one thing well while another activity carries you. That distinction changes everything.

#1 Driving Time (Still the Best Classroom I Have)

Some things don’t change. Driving is still one of the most reliable forms of NET time I have.

Audiobooks remain the backbone, but the method has evolved. 1.2x speed has quietly become a superpower—not rushed, not distorted, just tightened. It’s the difference between drifting through content and moving through it with intent.

The structure remains: rotate between learning and entertainment. Something heavy, something light. When something hits, pause, capture the thought, keep moving.

What I underestimated back then is how much this compounds. You don’t feel it day to day. But over years, you realize you’ve built an entirely different layer of thinking—constructed in the spaces where most people are just passing time.

#2 Designing Spaces That Pull You In

Back then, this started small—a tiny fitness room I had to force myself into. So I flipped it. Instead of relying on discipline, I redesigned the space to pull me in. Bigger screen. Better sound. Something I actually wanted to be around.

At the time, it paired fitness with entertainment—and even aligned with the film business through what was Bron Studios.

Today, that room is gone. The house is gone. The constraint is gone. The principle remains.

Environment is leverage.

Now it’s not about a single room—it’s about intentionally designed spaces for specific modes: focus, recovery, creativity. Same idea. Just done better.

You don’t rise to your goals. You fall to your environment. So design it accordingly.

#3 The Things That Fill the Gaps (and Sometimes Don’t)

Magazines were my original answer here—contained, tactile, finite. Perfect for flights. Easy to tear out, archive, share, follow up on later.

But time changes inputs. Fewer magazines. Fewer long flights. Fewer natural containers for that kind of focused reading.

I’ve tried to relocate it—turn it into intentional leisure time. It hasn’t quite stuck. And that’s okay.

Not every system survives. The lesson isn’t preserving the tactic—it’s recognizing when the condition that made it work has changed, and letting it go.

#4 Conversation in Motion

This one is new—or maybe just newly understood.

I’ve found myself pairing conversation with movement. Walking. Fixing something. Taking out the garbage. Enough structure to occupy the body, but not the mind.

There’s a line from Tony Robbins: “Emotion is created by motion.”

Movement changes the texture of conversation. It loosens it. Adds rhythm. Breaks patterns. You’re not sitting across from each other—you’re side by side, moving through something.

And sometimes the environment itself contributes. A small interruption becomes a better thread than the one you started with.

Subtle—but those conversations tend to go further.

The Thread That Still Holds

Looking back, NET time was never really about time. It was about attention—where it goes, how long it stays, and what you allow to coexist with it.

Driving didn’t create time. It created space for focus.

The fitness room didn’t create discipline. It removed resistance.

Magazines didn’t create learning. They captured otherwise lost moments.

Conversation in motion doesn’t create insight. It invites it.

These aren’t hacks. They’re adjustments—small structural shifts in how life is experienced. Over time, those shifts compound into something that looks like productivity—but feels more like alignment.

There’s something about planes that compress more than just legroom. Time compresses. Conversations compress. And occasionally—if you’re lucky—clarity does too.

On that flight from St. Louis to Manchester, New Hampshire, Joe Polish did what Joe does best. He turned a group of entrepreneurs into an impromptu experiment. Questions came out casually, almost playfully, but they had a way of sticking.

One of them sounded ridiculous on the surface: “What are your stupid human tricks?”

Not your résumé. Not your biggest win. Not your net worth. Your tricks. The things you do almost without thinking…

At the time, I gave three answers. Looking back now, more than a decade later, what’s interesting isn’t that they still hold up. It’s that they’ve quietly become more true.

Trick #1: Giving Without a Map

Before this sounds like a contradiction, it’s worth drawing a clean line back to something I just wrote about. Not all giving is the same.

I talked about giving with purpose—targeted, intentional, almost engineered. The MIT scholarship, for example, wasn’t random. It was deeply personal. It was about seeing something through. Supporting a path I understood. Extending a thread that had already shaped my life.

That kind of giving has direction. It has gravity. It knows exactly where it wants to land.

This is not that.

This is something else entirely.

This version of giving had a different internal driver for me: adventure. Not impact in the traditional sense. Not legacy. Not even return. Curiosity.

It showed up in strange ways—becoming a roadie for a day with The Who, training with the FDNY on Randall’s Island, sitting in rooms I had no business being in. Experiences that, on paper, made no sense as investments.

And yet, occasionally—without warning—they turned into something more.

A donation led to a lunch on the set of Stargate Atlantis. That moment turned into relationships. Those relationships turned into a company. That company became part of what was Bron Studios.

None of that was the goal going in. Not even close.

That’s the difference.

Giving with purpose is about seeing a future clearly enough to support it. Giving without a map is about stepping into a future you can’t yet see.

Both matter.

One builds what you already believe in. The other expands what you’re capable of believing in.

What I didn’t realize at the time is that this second kind of giving operates more like exploration than strategy. Small, intentional acts of generosity placed in high-energy environments with highly capable people—over long periods of time.

That’s not charity. That’s proximity.

And proximity, over time, becomes opportunity.

Today, the environments look different. A lot of the doors are digital. The access points are less obvious. But the underlying tension remains:

Do you fund the path you know… or step into the one you don’t?

The answer, at least for me, turned out to be both. Just not for the same reasons.

Trick #2: Lowering the Bar (on Purpose)

This one confused people then. It still does now.

Set the bar for success… low. Not in ambition—but in execution.

We live in an era of overwhelming input. Books, podcasts, conferences, feeds—all delivering what feels like life-changing insight on demand. The natural instinct is to take more. More notes. More ideas. More plans. And then… nothing happens.

What I learned—slowly—is that progress doesn’t come from collecting ideas. It comes from implementing one. Just one.

Take the best insight from a conference, a conversation, or even a failure—and make it real. Not perfectly. Not completely. Just concretely.

The compounding effect of this is almost invisible in the short term. But over years, it becomes staggering.

Looking back, I can now see something I didn’t fully appreciate at the time. When I first encountered this idea—likely somewhere around my early exposure to Tony Robbins—it wasn’t the insight that mattered. It was the restraint.

Choosing not to chase everything… so that something could actually stick.

In a world that increasingly rewards speed, this is a quiet rebellion.

And like most rebellions, it doesn’t look impressive while it’s happening.

Trick #3: Recording a Life (Before It Disappears)

The third one is the simplest to explain—and the hardest to sustain.

Write it down. Every day.

Not for publication. Not for performance. Not even for clarity. Just… record it.

What started as a suggestion eventually became a habit. And somewhere along the way, it became something else entirely: a mirror.

There’s a quote often attributed to Steve Jobs: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”

It’s a powerful question. But the journal adds something else. It doesn’t just ask the question—it keeps the receipts.

Over time, patterns emerge. Not the big, cinematic ones. The small, repeating ones. What you say you value. What you actually do. Where those two diverge—and how often.

There’s another layer to this now that didn’t exist in the same way back then. We are recording everything. Photos. Videos. Voice. Data trails of every kind.

Joe made a comment on that flight about people listening to those conversations hundreds of years from now. At the time, it felt like a stretch.

Now? It feels conservative.

The irony is that while we are capturing more than ever… we are understanding less of it. Maybe AI will change that equation?

Recording a life isn’t about storage. It’s about reflection. It’s about training for the future.

Because without that, all we’re doing is building a undocumented blur of memory.

The Thread That Ties It Together

Looking back, these weren’t really “tricks.” They were filters—ways of interacting with the world that quietly shaped what showed up next.

Give without needing a defined return.

Implement less, but actually do it.

Record enough to see what’s real.

None of them are complicated. All of them are easy to ignore.

And yet, over time, they seem to bend the trajectory of a life in ways that are hard to explain from the outside.

Which is probably why they showed up as answers to a question that to some could sound like a joke.

On that flight from St. Louis to Manchester, New Hampshire where Joe Polish turned a quiet trip into an impromptu interview with a few entrepreneurs trapped in the same aluminum tube for a couple of hours. That conversation didn’t stay on the subject of business for long.

In fact, one of Joe’s next questions pushed in the opposite direction:

What matters to you beyond business?

At first glance that might sound like a detour. In reality it’s the same road. Because if you spend enough years building companies, you eventually realize something important:

Understanding business also means understanding what sits outside of it.

Joe framed the question well. People who are not entrepreneurs often have a distorted picture of business owners — greedy operators obsessed with profit.

Yet most of the entrepreneurs I know eventually move in the opposite direction. After building something, they start asking a different question:

What difference can this make beyond the business itself?

Tony Robbins talks about contribution as one of the six human needs. If my memory is right, he also describes it as a circle that expands outward — starting with yourself (like the airline oxygen mask rule), then widening to family, friends, community, and sometimes much further.

Looking back now, the answers I gave Joe on that flight all lived somewhere inside that expanding circle.

Education: A Thread That Leads Back to MIT

Education has always been the most natural place for that circle to expand for me.

I graduated from MIT in 1986 with a degree in electrical engineering. Years later our family created the John Raymonds (1986) Scholarship as a way to give back while staying connected to the institution that shaped so much of my early thinking.

When the fund was first established in 2005, I didn’t fully appreciate how long the ripple effects of something like that could last.

Today the Raymonds Scholarship has been awarded 21 times to six recipients, with all but one receiving support for their entire four-year undergraduate experience — something MIT prefers whenever possible.

The scale of financial aid at MIT has evolved significantly over the years as well.

Today roughly 58% of MIT undergraduates receive need-based scholarships, and the Institute has expanded access dramatically in recent years, including policies that allow many families earning under $200,000 to attend tuition-free.

Scholarships funded by alumni and donors play a meaningful role in that system. MIT’s endowment itself is composed of thousands of individual funds created by alumni, families, and organizations, each helping support future students.

When you think about it, it’s a remarkable idea.

A decision made decades ago can quietly help students you will never meet.

When Education Takes Unexpected Forms

Education doesn’t always follow traditional paths.

Years ago I became involved in the revival effort for Reading Rainbow, the legendary children’s literacy program hosted by LeVar Burton. For an entire generation of kids, Reading Rainbow made books feel like adventures waiting to happen.

The show ran for twenty-six years on PBS, but by the time tablets and smartphones took over childhood attention spans, the world had changed. The question became how to bring that same sense of discovery into a digital environment.

The effort to revive Reading Rainbow as an interactive digital experience was part of that transition. Like many ambitious ideas, the journey was complicated and the outcome imperfect, but the intention was clear: keep the magic of reading alive for a new generation growing up in a completely different technological landscape.

Another path into education came through a much more unexpected direction: the XPRIZE Foundation.

I first met Peter Diamandis almost by accident while supporting a charity event that included a Zero-G flight with people like Tim Ferriss, James Cameron, and Elon Musk. The flight itself was unforgettable, but the real surprise was learning about Peter’s vision for using prize competitions to tackle some of the world’s hardest problems.

One of those problems was education.

The Global Learning XPRIZE was designed to answer a difficult question: could technology allow children in remote parts of the world — places without schools or teachers — to teach themselves basic reading, writing, and arithmetic?

The challenge invited teams from around the world to build open-source learning software capable of doing exactly that.

Years later the competition concluded successfully, with winning teams demonstrating that children in remote villages could indeed make significant learning gains using tablet-based educational software.

It was a powerful reminder of something simple but profound: Technology scales.

Schools and teachers, unfortunately, often do not.

For children growing up without access to education at all, the difference can be life-changing.

Sometimes the Lesson Is Simply Hope

Not all educational efforts look like scholarships or technology prizes.

Sometimes they look like a man in a tie-dye shirt.

In 2004 I met Rupert Boneham, who many people recognize from the television show Survivor. What many don’t realize is that Rupert has spent much of his life working with disadvantaged kids through the organization Rupert’s Kids.

The mission is straightforward: help children who are struggling — often because of poverty, unstable homes, or difficult circumstances — discover that they are capable of more than the world around them might suggest.

The programs range from mentoring to educational activities and life experiences designed to help kids build confidence and direction.

It isn’t education in the classroom sense.

But sometimes the most important lesson a child can learn is simply that someone believes in them.

A Small Disclaimer About Contribution

Before this list of causes gets misinterpreted, there is something worth clarifying.

If you look closely, the list of organizations and efforts I’ve supported over the years is not very long.

That’s intentional.

For me, contribution has never been about writing checks to causes I barely understand. Every effort mentioned here began with a personal connection — a person I met, a story I experienced directly, or an institution that played a meaningful role in my life — and has gone forward for years.

Without that connection the act feels hollow.

So if there is one takeaway from this part of the story, it’s that contribution doesn’t have to be broad to matter. Sometimes it’s more meaningful when it is focused.

And just to be clear — reading this article and reaching out asking for support will not work.

Not because the causes aren’t worthy.

But because the connection isn’t there.

The Unexpected Joy of Mentorship

There is one final form of contribution that surprised me as my career progressed.

Mentorship.

After decades of building businesses, navigating both successes and failures, and experiencing more volatility than any business plan ever predicts, the most rewarding moments increasingly come from helping someone earlier in their journey.

Not because you have all the answers.

But because sometimes you have just enough scars to help someone avoid one.

That kind of contribution doesn’t require a foundation, a scholarship fund, or a global prize.

Sometimes it simply requires a conversation.

In an similarly old piece I once wrote, I said success could be boiled down to doing what you say you are going to do. That still stands. But even then, I sensed there was a higher level to that answer. Sometimes the problem isn’t discipline. Sometimes the problem is identity.

Purpose vs. Character

Years ago, after listening to a Tim Ferriss podcast, I was struck by a line attributed to George Foreman: “The hardest thing you can do in life is to change your character.” Early in his career, Foreman was angry, intimidating, almost hostile. That anger fueled him — until it defeated him. Muhammad Ali used it against him in 1974, exhausting him emotionally and physically.

Years later, Foreman returned to boxing in his 40s not as the surly destroyer, but as a smiling, almost joyful version of himself. He became heavyweight champion again at 45.

Same man. Different character.

That’s a higher definition of success.

Doing what you say you’re going to do is powerful — but what happens when who you are prevents you from doing it? That’s where this becomes uncomfortable.

Tony Robbins started something in me years ago that I didn’t fully understand at the time. I carried anger. Rejection. A certain edge that felt justified. It served me in some seasons. It limited me in others. Changing that wasn’t about tactics or productivity hacks. It was about identity. About deciding I was no longer going to be that version of myself.

No announcement. No ceremony. Just a quiet internal shift: stop being that person.

It sounds simple. It is not.

Confession is a Crack in the Armor

The Free Press recently launched a video series called “Confessions.” It’s raw. People publicly admitting the identities they once held and the moments that cracked them open. There’s something deeply uncomfortable about that — and deeply powerful. Because confession is often the first fracture in a rigid identity.

One of the most memorable identity shifts I’ve witnessed was Brandon Straka. In 2016, after the presidential election, he posted a video of himself crying — shattered, confused, pleading. He described staying up late watching the results, terrified by headlines predicting catastrophe. The next day he went live again, asking through tears: “Why? What were you thinking?” For months he wrestled publicly with those questions, engaging people he once dismissed and challenging assumptions he didn’t know he carried.

Whether you agree with where he landed is irrelevant here.

What matters is that the crying man in that video eventually founded the #WalkAway movement — not out of bitterness, but out of a complete change in perspective. Right or wrong, he didn’t just change his mind.

He changed his identity.

Most people never allow themselves to do that. They defend the version of themselves they built at 25 as if it’s sacred. They protect it. Polish it. Justify it. Even when it’s the very thing holding them back.

Ego Death and the Real Definition of Success

We talk about tolerance for pain in entrepreneurship. But there’s another tolerance required: tolerance for ego death. It is not easy to outgrow your own character, especially when others expect you to stay the same. Especially when your identity has earned you loyalty, validation, or applause.

Change it anyway.

The earlier version of me carried anger that felt productive. For a while, it was. Eventually, it became weight. Letting it go didn’t make me softer. It made me clearer.

If something is holding you back that you “are,” maybe the move isn’t a new strategy. Maybe it’s the courage to stop being that person.

That isn’t motivational fluff. It’s brutal work. Because once you change, you lose the ability to blame the old identity. You own the new one. And just like in sports — having talent doesn’t guarantee a championship — having awareness doesn’t guarantee transformation. Many see the flaw. Few walk through the fire of replacing it.

But when you do, the world opens in ways you couldn’t access before.

The highest definition of success isn’t money. It isn’t applause. It isn’t even resilience.

It’s becoming the person capable of achieving what you once thought required someone else.

How would you define entrepreneurial success? What are you actually pursuing? Where does the ambition come from? If someone said, “This is successful,” what would that mean to you?

At the time, my answer was surprisingly basic.

Success, in my view, had little to do with money, status, connections, or credentials. It boiled down to something more fundamental: using your language — internally and externally — in a powerful and meaningful way by doing whatever comes out of your mouth.

Say it.

Mean it.

Do it.

Make sure the words you speak publicly are congruent with the thoughts you allow privately. If they aren’t, the only person you will ever succeed in fooling is yourself.

Decisiveness becomes the prerequisite. Clarity becomes the discipline. If you lack actionable thought, how can you possibly follow through on what you declare? It sounds simple, almost elementary, but in practice it separates you from the overwhelming majority of people. When turned into culture inside a business, it becomes a quiet competitive advantage — less talk, more done.

Back then I gave an example. Someone I met declared — to the giggles of the people around them — that they were going to sign up to be an Uber driver to earn extra income. Within a week, they were fully qualified. Shortly after, they were driving.

Halfway to success was the declaration. The rest was execution.

The giggles didn’t matter.

Or so I thought.

The Cost No One Sees

If I were answering Joe’s question today, I would add something I hadn’t yet fully internalized. The Uber story captures congruence. It doesn’t capture cost.

Years ago I was at SpaceX, and someone asked Elon Musk what the secret to being a successful entrepreneur was. He paused for a few seconds and said, “A high tolerance for pain.” At the time, Tesla and SolarCity were facing potential bankruptcy. Falcon 1 had failed three times. He had to decide whether to put the rest of his own money into a fourth launch attempt. He was going through a divorce.

That is not the Instagram version of entrepreneurship. That is not the keynote highlight reel. That is pain.

And that pain is not an anomaly.

It is part of the job description.

That pain is not theoretical to me.

I’ve faced failure inside a family business. Navigated divorce while carrying the weight of responsibility. Signed personal guarantees that exceeded my net worth. Fired someone nearly thirty years my senior and watched them cry — and no, that was far from fun. Invested too heavily in ideas that felt brilliant at the time. Watched ventures collapse. Even saw a major business fail after it had already become what most would call an amazing success.

None of that shows up in the highlight reel either.

I’ve seen a version of this pattern elsewhere. Watch Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris in Landman or Billy Crudup as Cory Ellison in The Morning Show. Strip away their flaws, the drama and what you find is a common thread: they absorb volatility so others can perform. They take the hits so the machine keeps running.

I saw something similar while involved, ironically, in a film production company. No one ever formally explained to me that shielding chaos was a core responsibility of leadership. In fact, I’m not sure it would have been described that way internally at all. I noticed it from the outside. Vendors failed to deliver. Promises from outside parties wobbled. Unexpected curveballs threatened to shut down a day of shooting. Yet the cast showed up, hit their marks, and went home focused on their craft.

And I remember thinking: if the cast and crew had to carry all of that uncertainty home with them every night, some of them might never have signed up in the first place.

Someone had to absorb that risk.

It’s like being a goalie — except your team isn’t in front of you protecting the net. They’re behind you. You’re protecting them from what’s flying toward the goal. You make split-second decisions with incomplete information. You stand in the line of fire so the rest of the team can keep playing.

No one applauds the disasters that never happen.

That’s not a role for the faint of heart.

Why It’s Rare — And Why It’s Worth It

So today, I would refine my original answer this way:

Entrepreneurial success is the disciplined habit of doing what you say you will do — combined with the psychological stamina to endure what that commitment costs you.

The Uber driver endured giggles. The founder endures sleepless nights. The leader endures blame. The producer absorbs chaos. The CEO carries uncertainty no one else is allowed to see.

And here’s the part that makes it difficult: if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

Just like in sports, having what it takes does not guarantee you a championship. Talent matters. Work ethic matters. Pain tolerance matters. But so do timing, competition, randomness, and the occasional cruel bounce of the puck. You can do everything right and still lose.

Which is precisely why so few people sign up for the position.

But when you do win — when the impossible stacks on top of the improbable and somehow breaks your way — it feels so worthwhile you can’t imagine doing anything else with your life. The sleepless nights make sense. The risks feel justified. The shots you absorbed fade into the background.

Then, if you’re lucky, you do it again.

And with enough repetition, something even stranger happens.

You actually get good at it.

Not immune to pain — but better at carrying it. Not free from risk — but more capable of navigating it. You start to see the patterns in chaos. You anticipate the puck before it leaves the stick.

That’s when entrepreneurial success becomes less about proving something and more about becoming something.

The language still matters. Congruence still matters. Decisiveness still matters. But without tolerance for pain, the words eventually collapse under pressure.

If you can say it, do it, shield the team, and keep moving forward even when the outcome is uncertain — that is entrepreneurial success.

The scoreboard may or may not cooperate.

The courage to stand in front of the net is the real win.

The real thing. The messy middle. The turnarounds. The questions I didn’t know how to answer at the time.

Seed Scapes began almost ten years ago on Medium. It didn’t even have a name then. It was just a place on the internet where I could think in public. Before that, there was an earlier personal blog—long gone now, buried somewhere in the digital graveyard.

Eventually, it became “Seeds to Grow a Life From.” That effort faded. Years later it was reborn here as Seed Scapes.

But I just realized, I never really re-introduced myself.

And the spark that pushed me toward writing more seriously didn’t come from a publishing strategy. It came from a random private flight from St. Louis to Manchester, New Hampshire.

The Flight That Planted a Seed

On that flight, Joe Polish started asking questions to pass the time. The conversation turned into an interview later published on his podcast, I Love Marketing.

At the time, I answered as best I could. Off the cuff. No script.

Years later, Joe wanted to do another interview with me for Genius Network. It never happened.

Life intervened.

But the questions stayed with me.

So for the next several weeks, I want to revisit them—both the ones that were asked and the ones that never were. Not to relive the past, but to go deeper than I did ten years ago.

Because I understand the answers differently now.

The Hardware Kid Who Hated Writing

I grew up an only child.

My father never really took me under his wing to teach me the business. That wasn’t his style. I loved science—especially electronics. I went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated as an electrical engineer. A hardware guy. Course 6.1 at the time.

I also loved photography. The art of freezing light fascinated me. The intersection of precision and beauty. Loved rockets too, but not enough to become a rocket scientist.

Writing? I hated it.

Maybe it was being left-handed and smearing ink across the page. Maybe it was just not feeling wired for words. I didn’t read my first modern novel, Red Storm Rising, until after graduating MIT. When I did, I discovered something shocking: I loved getting lost in a world that existed only in the mind.

That shift mattered more than I understood at the time.

Because the same brain that could reverse-engineer a circuit eventually learned to reverse-engineer decisions, businesses, and even itself.

The Turnaround That Wasn’t Supposed to Work

Our family’s rigid plastic packaging business was founded in 1969. Think The Graduate era. Profitable from day one.

Until it wasn’t.

I joined in 1988 and did a lot of listening. I played many roles before taking on leadership. In 1993, my father passed away. I became Chairman and CEO.

The business was facing bankruptcy.

My first task wasn’t brilliance. It wasn’t vision. It wasn’t some heroic strategic pivot.

It was to stop.

Stop going in the direction we were heading without knowing what the right direction was.

That sounds simple. It’s not.

It requires self-awareness. I knew I wasn’t a natural operator. So instead of pretending to be one, I hired a strong COO and focused on what I could uniquely do: think strategically, read patterns, assess people, and make hard decisions.

Over time, the company stabilized, then grew. Eventually, it sold.

From the outside, it looked like success.

From the inside, it was built on failure, fear, and a lot of uncomfortable conversations.

That experience shaped many of the questions people still ask me:

How do you know if a hired COO is taking a company in the right direction?

How do you begin again after selling a family business?

How do you deal with extremely difficult people who are somehow essential to the larger puzzle?

How do you recognize when you are the bottleneck?

Those are not theoretical questions. They’re lived ones.

Reinvention, Loss, and the Question That Drives Me

After selling the packaging business, I stepped into venture investing. Later, I spent about ten years in what I jokingly called my “day job” in the feature film industry.

Then COVID hit. And by 2023, that business was gone.

It feels like a lifetime ago already.

Success is cool. It photographs well.

Failure builds the foundation.

Some of my biggest internal shifts didn’t come from business at all. In 1998, I attended my first Unleash the Power Within in Orlando. I had two things at the top of my list: anger and fear of rejection.

Through years of work—monstly influenced by Tony Robbins—those traits have dissolved to the point where I honestly wouldn’t recognize the person I was back then. I wouldn’t be friends with him.

That transformation left me with one dominant question:

How can I help?

Not from a pedestal.

Not from an “I know more” stance.

From curiosity.

No matter who you speak to in life, they are better than you at something. Always.

If I can help someone go further, faster—and maybe with a little less unnecessary pain—then these seeds are worth planting.

Years ago—close to three decades now—I remember hearing Tony Robbins tell a story that stuck with me far longer than most advice ever does.

You walk into a room and realize your wallet is missing.

You believe Martians steal wallets.

You look up and see a Martian in the room.

Case closed.

Except, of course, it isn’t.

Tony’s point was never about Martians. It was about what happens the moment belief replaces investigation. The mind doesn’t pause. It doesn’t ask better questions. It doesn’t widen the lens.

It locks.

Once you believe something, your brain becomes less of a detective and more of a prosecuting attorney. Evidence is no longer gathered—it’s selected.

And for a long time, that story lived quietly in the back of my head.

Until last week.

When the Room Got Loud Again

What brought the Martian back wasn’t a seminar or a book.

It was a short video posted on X by Kaizen D. Asiedu.

The political controversy he addressed doesn’t actually matter for our purposes here. What mattered was how he addressed it.

He did something that feels almost rebellious today:

He slowed down.

Instead of reacting instantly—outrage or dismissal—he paused. He explained what actually happened. He separated intent from outcome. He introduced Hanlon’s Razor: incompetence is more common than malice.

Or, as I like to say—usually when people are deep into conspiracy theories and absolutely certain they’ve uncovered some grand, hidden design:

Never underestimate the incompetence of government.

That line usually gets a laugh. But it shouldn’t.

Because incompetence doesn’t require coordination. It doesn’t require ideology. It doesn’t even require intelligence. It just requires humans. Tired ones. Rushed ones. Poorly incentivized ones. People posting sixty times in a night with a screen recorder and too little sleep.

Malice, on the other hand, is expensive. It requires intent. Intent requires effort.

Then he said something far more dangerous than any hot take:

What evidence would change your mind?

That question hit like a tuning fork, because that’s the moment you can see the Martian—or refuse to.

When “How” Becomes the Trap

I’ve written before on Seed Scapes about How You Do One Thing Is How You Do Everything. It’s one of those ideas that feels obviously true once you see it.

But there’s a warning attached to that phrase—one I didn’t fully appreciate when I first wrote it.

The danger appears when the “how” becomes a belief instead of a question.

• He always does things this way.

• They’re that kind of person.

• People like that don’t make mistakes—they reveal themselves.

At that point, you’re no longer observing behavior.

You’re projecting motive.

And projection feels a lot like insight—right up until it isn’t.

This applies to ourselves, but it’s far more destructive when applied to others. Especially strangers. Especially enemies. Especially anyone we already “know” enough about to stop asking questions.

That’s when belief quietly replaces curiosity.

That’s when the Martian gets convicted.

The Preference We Don’t Like to Admit

Kaizen articulated something that deserves to be written on a card and taped to every screen we own:

When someone we like messes up, we assume incompetence. When someone we dislike messes up, we assume malice.

That’s not a principle. That’s a preference. And preferences are terrible tools for finding truth.

Beliefs want closure.

Truth demands patience.

One gives you emotional relief. The other asks you to sit with uncertainty a little longer. Most of us don’t fail at thinking because we’re lazy. We fail because we’re too fast.

I ran into one of those moments recently while scrolling X. It came from Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who wrote:

I don’t always agree with Taleb.

But I almost always respect him.

Not because he’s right all the time—he isn’t—but because he insists on grounding arguments in probability, exposure, and consequence. He doesn’t let intuition float freely. He demands it survive contact with math, with risk, with downside.

Still, that line stuck—not as a conclusion, but as a lens. And once it did, it began illuminating things I had already written… without fully seeing.

Speed, Testing, and the Comfort of Metrics

Modern life is obsessed with tests.

Timed exams.

Rapid-fire interviews.

Rankings.

Leaderboards.

Engagement metrics.

They all answer the same question: How fast can you respond under artificial constraints?

Speed matters. Sometimes enormously. But speed is a narrow signal. It tells us who can surface answers quickly—not who understands the structure of the problem, or whether the answer will hold once conditions change.

I’ve bumped into this distinction before. In The Game I Couldn’t Play, the entire system selected for velocity. If you weren’t fast enough, you simply didn’t belong in the game. Insight didn’t matter. Patience didn’t matter. Only reaction time.

That’s when it became clear:

some environments reward speed because speed is the point.

Real life usually isn’t one of them.

Jim Simons, Revisited

This is where the timeline matters.

18 months ago, I wrote about Jim Simons—his brilliance, his secrecy, the almost absurd success of Renaissance Technologies. It was a piece about depth, even if I didn’t quite call it that at the time.

What I missed was the unifying thread.

“I wasn’t the fastest guy in the world… But I like to ponder.”

That line wasn’t new.

But my understanding of it was.

Seen on its own, it reads like a personality aside. A humanizing detail. But placed next to Taleb’s observation about testing and real life, it becomes explanatory.

Sometimes that means connecting dots looking backward—realizing what mattered only after enough time has passed. Other times it means seeing a familiar idea refracted through someone else’s lens and recognizing the missing thread.

Often, it reveals itself later—when something unexpected forces a second look.

Speed performs well on tests.

Depth survives contact with reality.

It’s less a product announcement than a cultural statement: that our next attempt at meaningful connection might not come from better algorithms alone, but from understanding the textures of human expression that language, in text form, flattens or omits.

Voice as data — and what that means

At roughly the same moment that Overtone begins to stir conversation, another technology is quietly proposing an even more radical shift: voice as a biomarker — a measurable, reliable sign of internal human states. Companies like Amplifier Health are pioneering AI systems that analyze voice samples — as short as ten seconds — to reveal indicators of stress, emotional state, mental health conditions like depression or anxiety, and potentially much more. These aren’t metaphors or feel-good inferences; they are statistical patterns that AI is beginning to surface and quantify at scale.

That idea — your voice as a vital sign akin to heart rate or blood pressure — feels almost poetic. Yet it’s grounded in rigorous exploration: research shows vocal biomarkers can be correlated to mental health states with real predictive power, and clinical initiatives are underway to test voice analytics in detecting conditions that traditional screenings sometimes miss.

Amplifier Health isn’t selling science fiction. It’s participating in symposiums, winning pitch competitions, and collaborating with clinical partners — all with a mission to translate something humans have always felt but never precisely measured. They believe voice holds biological truths about stress, mood, cognition, and perhaps even neurological changes that previously required invasive, expensive diagnostics.

This nexus — where social connection meets objective measurement — is where the real “wow” moment begins.

What voice has always carried, but we never read

Think back to your own experience: how a lover’s voice can soothe or ignite, a friend’s tone can signal concern long before the words make sense, how your own voice tightens in stress or relaxes in comfort. We intuitively sense that voice carries meaning beyond text or imagery. We tend to think of technological leaps as inventions — new apps, new gadgets, new algorithms. But sometimes they are revelations: ways of seeing what was already there. In the end, perhaps the future of connection — romantic or otherwise — will not be about finding the perfect profile, but understanding the harmonics of ourselves and each other. When someone gives you something, they should be thanked.

Recently, I found myself on the other side of that assumption—quietly, almost accidentally.

I was in a conversation about giving. Not philanthropy with a capital P. Just everyday giving—time, effort, attention, resources. The person I was talking to placed real weight on being thanked. For them, the “thank you” wasn’t etiquette; it was respect. Proof that the gift landed. Evidence that it mattered.

I listened. I understood it. And I realized—again—that I didn’t share that need.

That wasn’t the surprise.

I’ve known this about myself for a long time.

I’ve never expected a thank you. Not as a principle. Not as a posture. It just isn’t something I track.

Roughly 25 years ago, I was in Fiji attending Date With Destiny, led by Tony Robbins.

This was back when “seminar” actually meant seminar. No stadium. No wristbands. Fewer than 50 people in the room. Close enough that when someone was called up, the air changed.

Tony brought a woman up and asked a deceptively simple question:

“What does it take for you to know that you’re loved?”

What followed was… impressive.

Flowers.

How often? Weekly.

Notes.

Handwritten.

Dates.

Surprises.

Consistency.

Tone of voice.

Timing.

Frequency.

The list kept growing.

None of it was unreasonable in isolation. Not one item deserved mockery. But taken together, it became almost comical—not because love is silly, but because the equation was impossible. No human could consistently hit all those marks without eventually failing.

Tony’s broader point—one he returned to often—was that we all carry rules for our emotions. Conditions we don’t consciously articulate, yet rigorously enforce.

I’ll feel loved when…

I’ll feel respected if…

I’ll feel appreciated only when…

The more elaborate the rule, the more fragile the emotion.

That memory snapped into focus as I reflected on the “thank you” conversation. I finally understood something I had always felt but never named:

I don’t give in exchange for acknowledgment.

I give in service of relationship continuity.

What I’m Actually Optimizing For

If the person receiving something from me is a child of mine—and years later that child can come to me for advice, or after a mistake, or in a moment of doubt, without hesitation—

That’s it.

Game over.

That outcome contains every “thank you” I could ever need.

A spoken word of gratitude doesn’t move the needle toward that future. Trust does. Openness does. The absence of fear does.

This doesn’t mean gratitude is meaningless. It means it’s not the metric I’m tracking.

Which reframes the whole thing:

Not needing a thank you isn’t apathy.

It’s clarity.

Two People. Two Rulebooks. Neither Wrong.

The person I spoke with isn’t wrong to value thanks. For them, it may signal respect, closure, or acknowledgment that giving wasn’t invisible. Perhaps they’ve lived in environments where effort went unnoticed, and gratitude became the proof of presence.

Different pasts. Different rules.

The problem only shows up when we quietly assume our rulebook is universal law—when we expect others to satisfy conditions they don’t know they’re being graded on.

That’s where resentment grows. Not from lack of generosity, but from unspoken contracts.

The Less You Need, the More You Receive

That woman on stage in Fiji wasn’t wrong either. Her list was simply revealing. It showed how easily our emotional equations become too complex to solve.

The paradox is uncomfortable but clean:

The more conditions you require to feel something,

the less often you will.

By contrast, when the requirement collapses into something durable—like relationship health—you create room for satisfaction to compound quietly over time.

No applause required.

One that likened a large portion of humanity to ambulatory large language models — I didn’t struggle to understand the intent behind it. That part was clear enough. The words were meant to provoke, to polarize, maybe even to offend a little. I recognized the posture immediately.

What caught my attention wasn’t the edge of the claim, but the possibility that it was accidentally pointing at something larger than its author intended.
